"Low Hanging Fruit Evangelism"

A Sunday School Class for Adults & Youth

August 2024

Sunday Mornings at 10:15am in the Small Dining Hall

In the early 1900's we started using the figurative phrase, "low hanging fruit" for things that are comparatively easier than other similar tasks. The phrasing comes from agriculture and fruit trees, where low hanging fruit can be picked from the ground, while fruit higher on the tree requires a ladder.

Sometimes we keep ourselves from tackling something we know that we SHOULD do because we see the hardest possible version of it and are discouraged from taking action. Picking the "low hanging fruit" of a task, the easier versions that help us find wins and get excited about it, can be a good way of helping ourselves to engage with something intimidating.

I think we often do this as Christians with evangelism, telling other people about Jesus. We lean away from talking about Jesus because we imagine the hardest version of a conversation or the people who we imagine would be least receptive to hearing about the gospel.

This August, we're going to be learning about how to go after the "low hanging fruit" of evangelism. We'll take a look at four different groups and some general principles and ideas for how to help each group see the beauty of the gospel in everyday conversations. Those four groups are...

  1. The De-Churched - People with a church background but no connection to a church, and often with a struggling or non-existent relationship with Jesus.
  2. Young People - Loosely defining this as teens and folks in their 20's and early 30's, a generation that has often been seen as detached from the church in the US, but where we're seeing some amazing moves of God's spirit in recent years.
  3. The Nones - People who express no religious loyalties whatsoever. Folks who just don't see what God, religion, or Jesus means to them and why they should care.
  4. Your, and Our, Neighborhood - The people who live around us in our neighborhoods and in the church's neighborhood.

This class will meet Sunday mornings this August at 10:15am in the church small dining hall. All adults and youth are invited to participate. We hope you'll join us as we seek to learn more about how we can love and serve folks who fit into these categories by sharing the gospel with them in ways they can understand!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Jon
